The sheer amount of misery is overwhelming. As I left Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago, amongst the literally thousands of homeless people camped everywhere that I looked, I noticed a family of four, mother, father, and two kids about 5 and 8 years old. They were literally living in two tents right on the sidewalk in front of the AirBnb apartment I had rented. I wondered how they fed them, bathed them, or sent them to school. I wondered how they explained to the kids what they were doing there. Did they tell them they were camping? I can't imagine the sheer desperation and humility that the parents must feel everyday. I wondered how I would go on should such a terrible fate befall me or my family. By far, the most discouraging part is the fact that the situation could be easily fixed by politicians but they can't be bothered. We can't be bothered.
